ABOUT

[What]

Archivo Latino is a mail-art-inspired research practice documenting the identities, cultures, and spatial practices of Latin America and its diaspora. Home to an open, evolving archive, we invite travelers and inhabitants to become co-authors through a “Letter of Request”, a prompt addressed to anyone inhabiting or transient to Latinidad.

The project poetically records ways of inhabiting, building, adapting, and moving through the region, attending to architectural irregularities, everyday encounters, and vernacular forms of ingenuity. It listens to the absent as much as the present, reading space through the informal, precarious, self-built, and incomplete.

Bringing together artists, architects, writers, designers, and cultural theorists, Archivo Latino proposes alternative methods of spatial research, uncovering hidden histories and revealing how social, economic, and cultural conditions become inscribed in the everyday landscape.

[Who]

Led by four practitioners from Latin America and abroad, Andrea Sánchez Moctezuma, Signe Ferguson, Renée Neme and Ana Amelia Batlle Cabral, we combine architecture, curation, and visual research to create malleable, digital archives exploring spatial memory and culture.

Andrea Sánchez Moctezuma [+-]
Co-founder & Archive Director

Andrea is an architectural designer from Mexico City. She holds a Master’s in Architecture from Yale University and a B.Arch with distinction from SCI-Arc, where she received the Thesis Merit Prize. In 2020, Andrea founded Autonomous Construction [AC], a multi-focus design practice based in LA & Mexico City. AC explores built, written, and temporal projects through a continuous loop of research, conceptual work, and fabrication. Some recent studio projects include The Monobloc Archive and The Taxonomy of unscripted living, which documents “informality” in rural Mexico.

Signe Ferguson [+-]
Co-founder & Editorial Director

Signe’s practice explores reassembly, material utopias, and in-between spaces. She is co-founder of BASA Atelier, a collaborative architecture, art, and research studio based between CDMX, New York, the Dominican Republic, and London. Trained at Yale and Brown in architecture, her work spans material science, performance, community fieldwork, collective organization, land art and stewardship, architecture, set design, sculpture, and furniture. Her independent research explores memorial and memory through “climate metronomes,” alongside methodologies for preserving serious play and appreciating the mundane.

Renée Neme Villarreal [+-]
Co-founder & Programming Director

Renée is a curator, designer, and writer from Mexico City. She studied Integrated Design and Museum and Curatorial Studies at Parsons School of Design in New York. Renée is the Founder and Director of El Patio, a multidisciplinary cultural center and artist studio space, and works as a creative and art consultant within an architecture practice. Her work moves across curatorial, spatial, and written projects, exploring how everyday materials, ideas, and spaces can be transformed into considered, poetic forms.

Ana Amelia Batlle Cabral [+-]
Archive & Exhibition Consultant

Ana is a Dominican-born architect, designer, and co-founder of BASA, trained at the Savannah College of Art and Design (BFA) and Yale University (M.Arch). Grounded in material research, craft, and myth, her practice spans architecture, furniture, surrealist objects, and land art. By treating native Dominican resources as cultural and ecological agents rather than commodities, she crafts ritualistic forms occupying a liminal space between the functional and symbolic, charged with memory, identity, and narrative weight.

Fault Lines for La Hoja

“Scars are the seams of memory.”
— Piedad Bonnet

Noticing the ghosts, fault lines, scars, and traces of the past requires acts of observation, interpretation, and deciphering.

We are seeking contributors to document evolving public spaces, construction sites, and civic landscapes across Latin America through long-form essays. We invite proposals that examine hidden histories, foundational shifts, rapid transformation, and social change as they become visible in the built environment.

Exhibition: Fault Lines
On View: 23 March – 27 April 2027
Location: Los Angeles, CA

For its inaugural exhibition in Los Angeles, Archivo Latino presents Fault Lines (Fallas), a curated selection from its growing archive, conceived in dialogue with the first edition of La Hoja, Archivo Latino’s biannual publication of the same title. The exhibition situates the archive within Los Angeles, a Latin American city in its cultural memory, once part of Mexico and traversed by its own geological fault lines.

Taking the fault line as both a physical condition and a metaphor, Fallas explores the geographic, emotional, and familial fractures connecting Latin America and California. Through personal correspondence, photographs, objects, and everyday traces, the exhibition brings intimate histories into a collective territory, revealing how migration, inherited memory, and domestic archives shape our understanding of belonging, displacement, and identity.

Exhibition: Teflon Memory
On View: 14 March – 04 April 2026
Location: El Patio, Sierra Santa Rosa 37, CDMX

Teflon Memory (Memoria de Teflón) represents a critique of a system where our history slips away and is easily forgotten, while the Archive introduces the indelible mark of the individual across time, serving as a reminder of the urgency of not forgetting. The co-habitation of El Patio offers domestic considerations for objects that were catalyzed by the collection of Latino Archivo.

Archivo Latino is a visual repository inspired by the methods of mail-art. The archive is dedicated to documenting the identity and culture of Latin America and its diaspora. The project operates as an open platform in constant construction, through a “Letter of Request”. These letters are addressed to Latinos in Latin America and non-Latinos in Latin America. Archivo Latino is an experiment that provides a platform for archives, testimonies, resistance, and Latino identities — through memory, written correspondence, and photographic archives. The exhibition seeks to raise awareness about historical erasure and the contemporary socio-political issues of Latin America, reinforcing a sense of permanence even in the temporal. As a first introduction to physical public space, Archivo Latino presents a part of the process of cataloguing itself.

La Hoja by Archivo Latino
Volume I: Fault Lines
Fall 2026

Editing Fault Lines has been a wonderfully surprising experience of noticing the personal in the political, and the political in the personal. We are excited to present essays that the archive itself activates.
We will continue to open calls for those willing to take an extra moment to consider the latin global fabric, the records kept in the built environment, and extra reverence for the temporal that may not be seen again.

Fault Lines starts a series of volumes which will examine space, people, and time, always asking the question: what should we pen on paper, and keep for others in years to come. As LATINO ARCHIVO initiates its first volume of La Hoja, an essay series & publication, we have quickly realized the importance of slowing down time, and letting someone get all their thoughts out, along with the beauty of editing and curation.

Latin America, as well as is a global trend, is facing a series of political, social, and environmental disasters and ‘quakes’, seemingly all at once. While every country, city, town’s culture is entirely unique, we nod to Sergei Eisenstein’s theory of montage, placing two (or more) things next to each other offers the opportunity to influence the interpretation of a single entity. Everything is becoming at once, and unbecoming. Everything is co-created. Nothing can be disassembled to a unit of one. Land, animals, people, buildings, all are in a melange of influence, simultaneously.

Our chief editor recently went to Lima and Cusco, noticing fragments of stories: the earth was red and pink, as were the bricked buildings; two missionaries crossed a train track, avoiding a tuktuk; cuy roasted on the street, and the smell of eucalyptus was strong in the air; balcones de cajón, inspired by the arab Mashrabiya, and introduced by spanish carpenters loomed overhead. Quipus keep track of time and record. One can’t help but recall the Motorcycle Diaries scene, when Che Guevara sits amongst ancient Inca ruins, contemplating the staggering contrast between past indigenous grandeur and modern South American realities: “How is it possible to feel nostalgia for a world I never knew? How can a civilization that built this be destroyed to build this.”

As we began exploring the theme of FAULT LINES for our inaugural issue, we quickly realized that there is untapped wisdom locked up in landscapes of instability, consider the earthquakes in Venezuela, Colombia, and Peru, as well as the political instability following and preceding elections. The common thread amongst the people and ideas featured in this volume is that each is working with variables around them to uncover resilience: a Costa Rican / Mexican uncovers ghosts, a Venezuelan notices a gate, an American looks at the surreal in Mexico, a Spaniard examines Brazilian and an artist studies sexuality in Incan culture.
